It’s also the home of Kili Bay, one of the most prominent tapioca pearl manufacturers in the world!
Taiwan Bubble Tea History
Although debated, the first bubble tea is thought to have originated from Hanlin Tea Store in Tainan, southern Taiwan. Whether true or not, it’s a well known fact that bubble tea comes from Taiwan, making Taipei the bubble tea capital of the world!
With more than 50 Taiwan bubble tea brands in the country, it’s an understatement to say that bubble tea is popular in Taiwan. It’s even pretty common to see multiple bubble tea stores on the same street.

The highlight of Kili Bay Pearl Milk Tea Cultural Center has to be the free bubble tea museum (aka Bubble Tea Cultural House). Filled with fun facts about Taiwan bubble tea, plus neat tidbits of history and drink combinations, this is one museum that will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth for knowledge.
What’s the pudding atop the boba is the English translations within the museum. While there’s not exactly a translation for every information panel, there’s still enough to make the visit definitely worth the trip.
2. DIY Bubble Tea
What’s better than buying bubble tea at the café? It’s making your own bubble tea! While the engineering behind making bubble tea is pretty simple, and it only takes about 30 minutes, Kili Bay’s DIY Bubble Tea is still super cute. Plus, attendees can take their delicious concoctions home in one of Kili Bay’s signature ‘lightbulb cups’ too.
While you can book online with Kili Bay to reserve your spot, I recommend booking online at Kkday as it’s $30 cheaper. Places can fill fairly quickly, so be sure to book ahead!

Kili Bay Bubble Tea Museum is in Su’ao, Yilan, and is located in the Yilan Su’ao Industrial Park. As such, I don’t really recommend heading there on foot. Scooters, bicycles, and cars will, however, definitely get you there safe and sound.
How much does Kili Bay Pearl Milk Tea Cultural Center Cost?
Like many other tourism factories in Taiwan, Kili Bay Bubble Tea Museum is free for entry. While the DIY Taiwan bubble tea experience isn’t included in the free admission, it only costs about NTD $200 per person (roughly USD $6.50).
